MUSKEGON —The Walled Lake Central boys and South Lyon girls won 2008 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 Team Championships at Northway Lanes on Feb. 29. Walled Lake Central beat Port Huron Northern in the final 1991-1900 (217-205-212-225-1132, 206-155-224-249-1066).

When the Walled Lake Central bowlers qualified fourth for match play in the Division 1 boys bowling tournament, the Vikings believed fate was on their side. And they were right! The Vikings won all three matches, beat defending champion Port Huron Northern in the final and won the state championship Friday at Northway Lanes in Muskegon.

MUSKEGON — It was a big day for the Walled Lake Central boys and girls bowling teams.Both advanced to Friday’s state team finals at Northway Lanes. The boys faced defending champion Port Huron Northern while the girls took on South Lyon, a team considered to be a title contender for weeks. Walled Lake’s Eric Christensen led the boys by shooting a 279 in the final game to give Walled Lake a 1,132 to 1,066 victory, sealing the Division 1 team title, 1991-1900.

The South Lyon girls' bowling team has qualified for the state finals in each of the five seasons as a MHSAA-sanctioned sport. However, the Lions failed to have a breakthrough performance on the sports' biggest stage. Until Friday. South Lyon defeated Walled Lake Central in the Division 1 championship match at Northway Lanes to earn its first bowling state title. In the boys' tournament, Walled Lake Central rolled through tournament play, beating defending champion Port Huron Northern for the state championship. It was also the first state bowling championship for the Vikings.

The last game of the last meet of the year has had a way of producing excitement in high school bowling, and history repeated itself Sunday, Feb. 17 at Airway Lanes in the Northern Lakes Conference final meet of the year. Danny Tursell, a junior from Walled Lake Northern, electrified the house as he tossed strike after strike in the second game of a match against Oxford. After the 10th and 11th strikes the crowd roared. Then, Tursell stepped up and rolled what looked to be the perfect ball and got a 7-10 split. He had to settle for 298.

Walled Lake Central girls join Viking boys as Oakland County Bowling Team Champions

Commerce Township — Two days. Two bowling titles for Walled Lake Central. The Vikings topped 21 of the area's top teams to win the fourth-annual Oakland County Girls Bowling Team Championship at Wonderland Lanes on Jan. 20, one day after Walled Lake Central won the boys title.

Commerce Township — Walled Lake Central beat 24 of the area's top teams to win the fourth-annual Oakland County Boys Bowling Team Championship at Wonderland Lanes on Jan. 19. The Vikings qualified as the fourth seed after three full games and four Baker games to reach the 16-team head-to-head Baker-match tournament. Walled Lake Central then beat Troy (444-386) and Farmington Hills Harrison (426-391) to reach the semifinals against upstart Ferndale.
